Newly Found Photographers
Nearing on the end of this bloody wild year that 2021 has been, I wanted to share with you some new photographers i’ve found through the many hours of scrolling that lockdown has allowed. I found quite a few of them through instagram, and that is one thing I will happily preach about instagram- it’s such a good place find photographers that match your style/aspirations.
When I first started my photography account, I had no idea who to follow and what to look out for. I was in year 11, I hadn’t taken photography for GCSE (as that wasn’t an option), but I knew I wanted to venture into the world of the image. I started following your generic accounts, lensbible, natgeo, nikoneurope and the very nostalgic brandonwoelfel. I knew what photos I liked looking at, and I knew what photos I wanted to take, but i’ve always been bad at knowing what to search up and this was troubling me at the time.
With help from studying photography for almost 5 years now I have managed to slowlyyyy build up my instagram page full of photos I want to see and photographers I want to keep up to date with, and i’m going to share them with you.
Click any of the photos below to be directed to their instagrams :)
Tim Wilson (Travel, documentary, landscapes)
Tim Wilson @timhasfun looks like (as it says in their instagram username) they do have fun aha! Wilson is a British photographer who travels around the UK, climbing, camping and generally just living a free, adventurous lifestyle. Their work consists of a mixture of landscapes, portraits, but mainly their travels (which incorporate all three). Wilson gives me the vibes of the quiet kid in class who is really good at what they’re doing but doesn’t boast about it.
I like Wilsons work because of their consistency with what they are taking images of, you know their work and therefore his audience is very catered for what he does. As well as that, to put it simply, their photos are fun. They are getting up to all sorts of activities and them photographing the events and uploading them allows us to almost join in; it makes me want to just hop in my car and go off on my own adventure as well! They take what you would see when on these trips and boosts up the beauty and fun of them all, they make England seem like rural America aha. I was amazed to find out their photos were taken in the UK as the scenery and weather more so did not strike me as something you’d see over here.
Definitely one to keep an eye out for if you’re a bit of a nature lover.
Thomas Duffield (Portraiture, social documentary, still life)
I’m not swearing on this blog so i’ll just say HOLY MOLY ITS BLOODY BEAUTIFUL!!! I was very happy to stumble across Thomas Duffield @thomas.duffield earlier on this year because the pure simplicity but beauty of their work is what amazes me. Duffield is a british photographer who has won a few awards including Portrait of Britain winner in 2019, and has worked for companies such as Financial Times and TRIP. Duffield has had exhibitions all over the UK with their work and has created some talks/lectures in the royal photographic society and in Photo North Festival in Harrogate.
I mean visually, it’s very clear to see that they’ve got it down. When I think of Tim Walker for example, I think their work is beautiful, its busy, eccentric and very elaborate. Duffield almost has the exact opposite ideas but their work is just as beautiful. It’s minimalism with his environments and the story he’s able to tell through that, and their work I find is very personal, there is a message attempting to reach out of that image and punch you in the face with. They’ve got how to make an image appealing to look at, their technique of lighting, framing, colour and how they have worked the camera for this soft but focused images- I cant speak, my breath has been taken away !!!
Lauren Luxenburg (Editorial, fashion, portraiture)
Now, when I say I love colour…..I LOVE COLOUR. For me the way you use colour within an image is SO SO SO important, it’s one of the things you notice first and probably draws your attention- well I know it does mine, and Lauren Luxenburg does colour the justice it deserves!! Imagine, you’re walking through a store. You’ve just come up to where all the magazines are, as you’re scanning you see a lot of your typical covers, plain neutral colour background, portrait, at the viewpoint of the human eye and then all of a sudden WHAM! A bright colourful, fun picture comes along with all this colour incorporated so strategically and finished so well- it just stands out amongst the crowd you can imagine.
Luxenburg has quite a youthful but at the same time mature approach within their photography. They’re quite fun and playful with their angles, composition and use of colour and, very creative with the environment/setting they chooses to photograph in. Luxenburg is also a director, so think about their photos and just imagine how they are with the moving image (i’ll tell you: engaging and bloody stunning). Luxenburg has this quirkiness to them that I can’t quite put down into words, they seem very innovative and generally like a very artistic individual and I think it goes to show in their work.
Moon Immisch ( Experimental, portraiture, editorial)
I came across Moon Immisch @moonimmischphotography when someone reposted this photo to the right on their story. I saw the image and it was pretty much love at first sight honestly! I clicked on their page to find out they are a graduate from UWE, so still very young and fresh to the scene, and i think that made me fall in love with their work even more. I honestly thought, looking at their photographs, that they had been around within the industry for a while and this was a commissioned piece of work- to find out is is something they did for a project of theirs…WOW! To just go off on your own, create something this professional just with your own resources, Immisch work is screaming for a place in a magazine!!!!! (or at least it deserves to be there).
After looking at their instagram account and her website, I will honestly say that my favorite work has to be their own personal projects. They have such a creative orientated mind (or it seems it) that the background/environment they choose, the makeup they put on the model, the styling, the composition, it all seems so thought out and so perfect; I couldn’t imagine the photos they’ve taken to be better in any way because they are just so stunning already. Immisch I can see fitting in well with small independant indie/fashion magazines with their playful work- I said luxenburg was youthful, now THIS is fun! I’m really excited to see where Immisch goes with the journey they are on in the photographic world, i’ll be keeping my post notifications on !!
(as should you)
Of course, there are plenty of other photographers that I have come across this year such as, @chriscolls, @felicityingram, @iamdanielobasi, @ethanjamesgreen, @arianazukowski, @niamh.mcparland and @beccyphotos of which I recommend VERY MUCH to anyone who wants to check out some more photographers similar to the ones i’ve shown above.
It’s been amazing finally having a more directed instagram tailored to what I want to see and what I want to inspire me, I just had to do a lot of digging and a lot of scrolling (thanks lockdown I guess :3 ).
